Getting started
UpPay adds a payment-choice popup to your storefront: customers pick Full Payment, a partial deposit, or Cash on Delivery before they reach checkout. Three steps and you are live:
Partial payment rules
Rules decide when the popup appears and which payment options it offers. There are two scopes:
Cart rules apply store-wide and trigger from the cart page, the cart drawer and Buy it now. You can restrict them by minimum/maximum cart amount, customer country, and customer tags. The first matching rule (top to bottom) wins.
Product rules target specific products and take priority on product pages when the customer uses Buy it now.
Each rule contains payment options:
Full Payment — the customer pays everything now through your normal checkout. Optionally attach a prepaid discount (percent or fixed) to reward paying up front; discounted full payments run through an UpPay invoice so the discount is applied automatically.
Partial payment — the customer pays a deposit now (percent of the total or a fixed amount) and owes the balance on delivery. Button text and badges are customizable per option.
The storefront popup
Your theme's native Checkout and Buy it now buttons stay visible. When a customer clicks either one and a rule matches, UpPay opens a popup with the order summary and the available payment choices. If no rule matches, the customer continues straight to your normal checkout — UpPay never blocks a sale.
Orders & balances
The app's Orders page lists every order processed through UpPay with its live payment status from Shopify ("Partially paid", "Paid"), the amount collected up front, and the balance still due. A Draft Orders tab shows deposit checkouts that were started but not yet paid, and you can export everything to CSV.
When you collect the outstanding balance (for example cash on delivery), open the order in Shopify admin and use Collect payment → Mark as paid. UpPay picks this up automatically and marks the order fully paid in the app too.
COD fee & Limit COD
COD fee — charge an extra fee when customers choose Cash on Delivery. The fee is shown next to the COD option in the popup, and the customer must tick a consent checkbox naming the exact amount before checkout continues. Only then is it added to the cart as a visible line item, so the cost is disclosed and explicitly agreed to up front.
Limit COD — hide the Cash on Delivery payment method at checkout based on rules: order total (min/max), delivery location (countries, provinces, ZIP codes), specific products or collections, customer emails or tags, and payment type (block COD for partial or prepaid orders). Configure it on the app's Limit COD page; it runs as a Shopify Function, so it works natively inside checkout.
Shipping rules
Show or hide shipping methods depending on how the customer pays: match a method by name and choose whether it applies to partial orders, prepaid orders, or any order. For example, hide "Express Shipping" for deposit orders, or show a special "COD Rate" only for prepaid carts. This also runs as a Shopify Function inside checkout.
Appearance & languages
Under Partial Payments → Settings you can change button and badge colors, font size and family, toggle amounts on buttons, and add custom CSS for full control. Every customer-facing text in the popup is translatable per language from the same page, so the widget can match your storefront's locale.
Plans & limits
Every plan includes all features. Plans differ by the number of orders per 30-day cycle your store processes (all store orders count toward the meter). When the limit is reached the storefront widget pauses until the cycle renews or you upgrade — customers can still check out normally, they just are not offered partial payment. The dashboard shows your current usage and the reset date, and all charges are handled securely by Shopify Billing.
